Why Music Is a Form of Worship: Discovering How Faith and Creativity Unite
"Music has been a part of my life forever. I've always loved to sing, I've always loved to play the piano, and using that gift, that creative gift, glorifies God."
Have you ever wondered why music moves us so deeply? Why a simple melody can lift our hearts to prayer, or why singing together in church creates such powerful moments of connection? For me, the answer is clear: music is worship. Not just during Mass or in formal settings, but in every note we play, every song we learn, and every creative gift we choose to develop.
Let me share my journey of discovering how music becomes worship and how this truth shapes everything we do at Loreto House Music.
Learning Through Song: Where It All Began
I was homeschooled, and my mom quickly realized something important: I learned best when information was set to music. Diagnosed with dyslexia in third grade, traditional learning methods didn't always work for me. But music? Music was different.
I still remember when my mom put the Gifts of the Holy Spirit to song for my Religion lessons. To this day, I can recite them perfectly, not because I drilled them through repetition, but because they were woven into a melody that my brain could hold onto.
That experience taught me something profound: music isn't just an art form or a pleasant hobby. It's a powerful tool for learning, for memory, and most importantly, for worship. When we engage our creative gifts, whether we're naturally talented or still learning, we're using abilities God gave us. And when we use those gifts intentionally, we glorify Him.
The Gift of Excellence in Worship
My understanding of music as worship deepened in high school when I joined a teen choir at our parish. We practiced for three Thursday evenings each month, then played at Sunday evening Mass.
This experience taught me about excellence, not perfectionism, but the discipline of offering our best to God. We worked hard, practiced diligently, and showed up prepared because the Mass is the highest form of worship. When you're playing music for the liturgy, you're not just performing; you're facilitating prayer. You're helping the congregation lift their hearts to God.
I played piano for our Masses, learning new Mass settings like the Gloria. For Midnight Mass, I played "O Holy Night" and Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring." The experience of giving God glory through a gift He gave me, a gift I had practiced and refined, brought me immeasurable joy.
What a beautiful circle: God gives us creative desires, we develop them through practice and dedication, and then we offer them back to Him as worship.
Music as Prayer: Witnessing Transformation
Fast forward to marrying my husband, a traveling Catholic worship leader. Through his ministry, I've witnessed firsthand how music transforms hearts and facilitates prayer.
When my husband leads worship, especially during Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, something sacred happens. The music creates space for people to encounter Jesus. It helps them pray when words fail. It turns individual hearts toward God and unites the congregation in faithful praise.
Music, when we allow the Holy Spirit to work through it, becomes a conduit for God's grace. It's not about technical perfection or flawless performance; it's about using our gifts to point others toward Jesus.
Integrating Faith and Music: The Mission of Loreto House Music
This is the heart of Loreto House Music and Creative Company: to help families discover that music and faith aren't separate compartments of life. They're beautifully integrated.
Our mission is to uncover creative gifts and musical desires in students of all ages, then help them recognize how these gifts can glorify God. Whether you're learning your first scales or mastering complex pieces, every note can become an offering of praise.
More Than Just Piano Lessons
Yes, piano lessons teach valuable skills. They work important parts of the brain, provide good discipline, and offer a worthwhile extracurricular activity. But they can be so much more.
When we teach music at Loreto House, we're also teaching a crucial life lesson: faith doesn't belong in a separate box. Your love of learning, your creative pursuits, your hobbies and passions, all of these can integrate with your relationship with God.
Nothing in life needs to be mutually exclusive. The sooner children learn this, that the things they enjoy can also glorify God, the more integrated and joyful their faith journey becomes.
The Parable of the Talents: Multiplying Your Gifts
The Gospel parable of the talents speaks powerfully to this mission. The good steward didn't hide what the master gave him; he invested it, grew it, and multiplied it.
If God has placed a creative desire on your heart, it's there for a reason. Whether it's music, art, writing, or any other creative pursuit, our responsibility is to develop these gifts. As parents, we're called to recognize these gifts in our children and help them flourish.
And here's the beautiful part: even if that talent never leaves your home, it's still worthwhile. The domestic church, your family, your home, matters immensely. If your child learns to play piano beautifully and only ever plays for your family, that alone glorifies God. That alone is enough.
Music in the Domestic Church
The home is where faith is first learned and lived. When you fill your home with music, when your children practice piano and play worship songs, you're creating an atmosphere of beauty and praise. You're showing them that ordinary moments can become sacred when offered to God.
This is why our sheet music library features scripturally based worship pieces. These aren't just technical exercises, they're tools for spiritual formation. They teach piano fundamentals while deepening knowledge of God's Word and drawing young hearts closer to Jesus.

The Beautiful Truth
Here's what I've learned through years of teaching and playing: God puts creative desires on our hearts for a purpose. Music is one of those gifts, and when we develop it, whether we're eight years old or eighty, we're participating in something bigger than ourselves.
You don't need to strive. You don't need to be perfect. You can simply sit at the piano, play music, and glorify God through the gift He's given you.
Music is worship. And worship is what we were made for.
